When Fungi contribute to the future
How will we be able to feed 10 billion people in the not too distant future without causing widespread environmental damage? How can we stop using petroleum and still be able to manufacture chemical industry products? Potential answers to all these questions can be found in the latest developments in fungal biotechnology, which can now be read in a white paper entitled “Growing a circular economy with fungal biotechnology”.
This policy paper , recently published by the pan-European Think Tank EUROFUNG headed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Vera Meyer (TU Berlin) summarizes the discussions of leading European and American researchers and global businesses.
The experts, among them Philipp Benz, Professor of Wood Bioprocesses at Technical University of Munich (TUM), are in agreement: fungal biotechnology is a driver of innovation and growth for a range of industries and can help transform our petroleum-based economy into a biobased economy. Investing in this future technology will also enable a sustainable change in how we live and work.
