In the Financial Times' "Europe's Leading Start-Up Hubs" ranking, UnternehmerTUM is at the top of 125 European start-up centers. The Financial Times emphasizes UnternehmerTUM's strong network, which includes large companies, SMEs, investors, international research institutions and politicians. Another strength is that TUM students can take part in UnternehmerTUM courses as part of their degree programs.
TUM Venture Lab FAB at the TUM School of Life Sciences Freising
"The TUM Venture Lab Food/Agro/Biotech, FAB for short, offers a unique hub at the TUM Campus Weihenstephan to translate innovations from basic research into applied technologies and commercialization," explains Prof. Dr. Arne Skerra, Academic Director of the FAB. At the TUM Venture Lab FAB, dynamic teams are currently working together on around 95 interdisciplinary projects to drive innovation and jointly master climate-relevant and technology-driven challenges. "We offer a vibrant ecosystem for food, biotechnology and agricultural start-up projects - the perfect meeting place not only for start-ups but also for established companies, for our talented students and, of course, the researchers who work here at our university," explains Dr. Roman Werner, Managing Director of FACIT and FAB.
There are teams such as FarmInsect, which is working on animal feed made from insects, or Koralo Foods, which is researching the future of sustainable seafood in microalgae and mycelium. Felix Schiegg is co-founder of Paltech, a FAB start-up. He describes how FACIT at the TUM School of Life Sciences is helping them to solve one of the biggest problems facing organic dairy farmers: "We use our drones, robots and artificial intelligence to detect and remove weeds from pastureland. For our project, we primarily need the machines and the entire infrastructure, i.e. premises where we can work. That's exactly what we get here at the Venture Lab."
This video offers more impressions of the FAB and the projects.
UnternehmerTUM as a challenger to Silicon Valley
For the Financial Times ranking in collaboration with the data company Statista, graduates of the start-up centers as well as investors, entrepreneurs and researchers were surveyed. The success of the start-ups was also assessed.
Other international media such as The Tech, a magazine published by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Sifted, the best-known European start-up magazine, have also portrayed the TUM ecosystem in recent weeks. Sifted ranks Munich together with Austin as the world's most interesting challengers to Silicon Valley.
