In their publications, researchers cite the most important articles that have appeared on a topic to date. The citation frequency is therefore a good indicator of the quality and global recognition of a research paper and its authors. The ‘Highly Cited Researchers’ are determined once a year from the ‘Web of Science’ database, in which the US company Clarivate Analytics records scientific publications from a wide range of subjects.
The current edition of the ranking shows the scientists who were cited most frequently in their respective fields between 2013 and 2023. Researchers who are frequently cited in different subject areas are listed in the ‘Cross-Field’ category. In total, the list comprises around 6,900 people without ranking. The following scientists from the TUM School of Life Sciences are represented:
Cross-Field:
- Prof. Dr. Dirk Haller, Chair of Nutrition and Immunology
- Prof. Dr. Ingrid Kögel-Knabner, Chair of Soil Science
- Prof. Dr. Bernhard Küster, Chair of Proteomics and Bioanalytics
- Prof. Dr. Anja Rammig, Professorship of Land Surface-Atmosphere Interactions
- Prof. Dr. Melanie Schirmer, Professorship of Translational Microbiome Data Integration
- Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Weisser, Chair of Terrestrial Ecology
Biology und Biochemistry:
- Prof. Dr. Fabian Theis, Chair of Mathematical Modelling of Biological Systems
Environment and Ecology:
- Prof. Dr. Rupert Seidl, Chair of Ecosystem Dynamics and Forest Management in Mountain Landscapes
Immunology:
- Prof. Dr. Dietmar Zehn, Chair of Animal Physiology and Immunology
Plant and Animal Science:
- Prof. Dr. Klaus Mayer, Honorary Professor of Genome Biology of Plants
This makes Ingrid Kögel-Knabner one of the world's most cited researchers for the tenth time in a row, and Rupert Seidl for the fifth time in a row.
The remaining TUM researchers include:
- Prof. Dr. Matthias Eiber, Clinic for Nuclear Medicine, TUM University Hospital
- Prof. Dr. Stefan Leucht, Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, TUM University Hospital
- Prof. Dr. Josef Priller, Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, TUM University Hospital
- Prof. Dr. Mikael Simons, Chair of Molecular Neurobiology
- Prof. Dr. Xiaoxiang Zhu, Chair of Terrestrial Ecology
In addition, Prof. Laura Herz is among the Highly Cited Researchers in the Cross-Field category. The University of Oxford physicist is currently a fellow at the TUM Institute for Advanced Study.
